Game Review: Knights of Pen & Paper +1

Knights of Pen & Paper is a very unique game, in fact it's one of a kind. You aren’t just playing a turn-based fantasy adventure, you’re also playing as a Dungeon Master and a group of up to five tabletop gamers. It's a literally a role playing video game, you choose your own enemies, your own characters and quests.  Knights of Pen & Paper +1 attempts to blend retro table games in a unique meta-RPG experience, throwing in no small amount of humour, pop culture references, quirky pixel art and nostalgic chiptunes. Behold Studios, the developer of this game, is a small indie game development studio, from Brasilia, capital of Brazil. The studio was founded in 2009 by Saulo Camarotti, and has been nominated and awarded several times since its beginning. The game has mobile and tablet version with identical content, but has a few different settings.

At the beginning of this awesome game, like any other RPG games you have to create your squad. you can choose different people with different abilities, and choose the roles that they will play. The group starts off in a dungeon - as is traditional - and they soon find themselves in “Default Village”, a town plagued by, you’ve guessed it, rats and bats. There are many types of quest, all of which are bookended in full D&D mode by the narrator, the Dungeon Master. This is a game that's not only beautifully written but has a great gimmick to play with and does so. The Dungeon Master and friends are sometimes talking 'in character' and sometimes like buddies playing a game. The dialogues are hilarious! There are heaps of puns and "grownup's" jokes that will make you giggle. The main story of this game is just to help villagers with their distresses. However, there's a big twist! A really strong dark wizard got too strong and takes over the whole table game and get through the real life dimension to take over the world. yeah...

The game play is addictive, the turn-based combat mechanic makes the game much more retro feel of RPG. Battling is an intricate turn-based system that's hugely fun to master, with enemies always surprising in how they deal with your ever more explosive army. Also, traveling from place to place changes the backdrop as well as the quests available, and is controlled through a simple map overlay. It costs in-game dollars to travel anywhere, which limits your initial movement, but before very long you'll have a truckload. So, there is a small weak point in this game, in the late game, you have to grind for money and levels to get strong equipments and skill, to proceed killing the tougher foes.
